LXI Standard for Ethernet Testing Instruments & DAQ Systems

Overview

In 2005, VTI cofounded LXI, an industry standard for ethernet-based test instrumentation, and is also the industry leader in open platform switching solutions. LXI stands for LAN eXtension for Instrumentation. It extends on traditional LAN, adding instrument interoperability requirements, timing and synchronization options, and enhanced performance, that makes it ideal as an instrumentation platform.

LXI Instruments & Hardware

LXI instruments range from LXI modules that plug into a chassis to standalone instruments that have dedicated LXI and hardware trigger bus connections. These instruments can be configured to measure many types of variables to precise values. Some of these instruments also incorporate 6.5-digit DMMs as well as user-programmable digital alarm circuits.

LXI Software

Our EXLab turn-key software package supports our LXI instruments and provides an intuitive GUI that can be used to quickly and efficiently configure them and record data into open formats.

Key Attributes that Set LXI Apart

  1. Ethernet’s speed, simplicity, worldwide reach, low implementation cost, and continuous advancement without neglecting backward compatibility allow you to resist obsolescence, cost, and compatibility issues that plague other types of interfaces.
  2. Basing the LAN Extension Instrumentation protocol on a widely known and widely supported network protocol enables instruments to be located in different geographic areas. This is useful for remote monitoring or applications that require multiple measurements to be performed in different geographic areas.
  3. LXI-compliant instruments allow quick and easy configuration through their intuitive web interfaces. One major advantage to this approach is that the inclusion of web interfaces on LXI instruments enables engineers and technicians to configure them without any special software or platform constraints.
  4. Simplified programming and greater LXI software reuse through IVI drivers reduces man-hours, reduces software costs, and increases maintainability. Spend more time testing and lest time troubleshooting, configuring, and maintaining your equipment.
  5. A distributed backplane architecture through the implementation of a hardware trigger bus results in highly deterministic performance without the overhead of a chassis. The absence of a mandatory chassis facilitates lower cost designs that embrace higher flexibility than those requiring a chassis for each cluster of instruments.
  6. LXI instruments are almost infinitely scalable. Test systems can consist of a few instruments to hundreds of instruments. They function across a variety of platforms.
  7. Engineers and technicians can easily create hybrid systems that incorporate PXIe, LXI, GPIB, and VXI devices. This can be accomplished through the use of bridge devices such as VTI’s EMX2500 LXI-PXIe and EX2500A LXI-VXI slot 0 interfaces.
  8. LAN-based triggering modes enable enhanced system performance and event handling.
  9. Synchronization of local and remote instruments through the IEEE-1588 precision time protocol enables precise time-stamping of data and precise coordination of instrument activity.
